Is there a difference between boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m taking a Kickboxing class. It’s light sparring most of the time. We were told we could buy our own gloves since the school ones smell bad. While I was looking them up online, it looked like boxing gloves were different from kickboxing gloves. Is there a difference? Can I use boxing gloves for a kickboxing class?

it depends. i would ask your school. some of the gloves used in some classes are designed to be light and allow for grappling or grabbing an opponent. boxing cloves force you to make a fist and keep it that way.

What are some great exercises for a beginner in Judo or Ju Jitsu?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Just wanted to know some exercises (so I can do them daily) to get ready for the practice of Judo or Ju Jitsu.

Sure…

Here are incredibly valuable conditioning exercises to help. Just by doing these exercises you build up explosive motion which helps you tremendously.

Here is a good site with a good bit of videos showing great warm up exercises.

Shoulder bridges: Developing an explosive bridge is key to getting out of pins and bad positions.

Shrimps and crawls, again teaches you how to maneuver and scramble, virtually all grappling arts work on shrimps it is one of the best ways of getting out from under someone.

Hindu pushups: Great for building range of motion strength.

Kazushi exercises with a powerband or inner tube: This really helps you as you get more advanced and understand how to do Uchi Komi.

Gi pull ups: Pretty easy, throw a Gi over a bar and use the Gi to do pullups. This develops massive grip strength, functional grip strength needed when working with Gis.

Here is another good article.

Good luck!

Is MMA training becoming a fad?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

a lot of kids now are starting to look for mma schools, and a lot of new guys just enrolled for my muay thai academy. my MT place only accepts you on 1 year contracts, and after 3 months of training, i can already tell most of those guys thatj ust signed up wont be staying after the year. some dont even show up to class anymore, or come once in a bluemoon. is this the same for you guys? i think this fad will die off in about a year.

Of course it is a fad. That is not to say that MMA doesn’t have its valid points. The problem is commercialism and what it has done to all martial arts, not just mma. Someone else mentioned several of the other fads that have been around. Since 1967, I have seen many of these fads come and go. The arts themselves do not go away, they just become less desirable, as a new fad comes into popularity. Right now mma is popular so many schools claiming to teach it have sprung up. Unfortunately many of them have instructors that are simply not well trained. But, then again, I meet traditional instructors that are not well trained either. To answer you question….. Is the MMA becoming a fad? It is not becoming a fad, it has been one for some time.

Any good places to study Krav Maga in the Boston area?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Has anyone actually been to a good place for Krav Maga anywhere from Boston up to Salem, NH – I live about 15 minutes north of Boston and 15 minutes south of Salem.

I have zero previous martial arts experience but after much consideration have realized Krav maga suits my purposes perfectly. The problem is trying to find a place that has good instructors so I won’t be wasting my time.

I’m 25, 6′0, 180 – previously in great shape but I tore ligaments in my ankle and knee about 6 months ago and just now am structurally recovered though I’m not nearly in the same shape I used to be due to recovery and my muscles having very little workout during that time as you can probably imagine.

Anyway, anybody have any information they care to give me? I really appreciate any help.

Did some quick Research and this is what I have found…
