What do I need to do to start a kickboxing class?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I would like to start teaching a Kickboxing class for cardio. What legal steps do I need to take to do this without getting into trouble. I am not certified, but have many years of experience. It would just be a small class with mostly friends but I know that they will want to bring friends and so on and it will get bigger and I want to do things right so that I don’t have to worry about it in a legal sense if it does grow.

It depends on where you will hold the class at.

For example:

If you hold it at a local gym, they will usually have the insurance and what not covered. They will hire you based on an evaluation of you.

If you open your own school, there are a myriad of legal issues you have to consider such as, licensing, business permits, insurance, safety/cpr/first aid training.

If you open it in your house/garage, you are putting yourself and personal property at risk against lawsuits. Again, you will have to register a business liscense, get insurance, etc…

I teach ONLY CLOSE friends currently in a mini-gym I built in my garage. Its not really a class though, only friends practicing together. I do have my own business, but am not insured, hence I don’t teach.

Hope this helps.

I need a strategy in Judo for going against an opponent who is faster than me and nearly as strong?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Usually I’m as stronger than any of the Judo people I randori with. There is one guy who is almost as strong as I am but he is faster. I need to think of a strategy where I can use my slight advantage in strength to offset his speed. This is more of a general question how to use power / technique to offest speed.

The same way that you would use someones weight against them. Use his speed against him. Give him something that you know he’ll take but have a counter already in mind. People who are fast/quick in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu have the same problem. When they go for something they are fully commited. Very few are undercontrol. If you are able to stop or counter one of their moves, most likely they are in a bad position. Take advantage of it.

Has anyone taken classes at the KRAV MAGA gym in sherman oaks? If so, how was the experience? Did you like it?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Im planning on going there but I just want to hear more about it. Is it watered down Krav maga they teach over there? Any info is great.

Krav is killer stuff. Easy to learn and an awesome work out and very practical. After a few month you will really notice the difference in your strength and stamina.

Just make sure whatever school you join is accredited so you can be registered world wide when you earn your belts.

Here is the link

Is mixed martial arts a good way to prepare for Navy SEAL or any other military branch?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’ve just been wondering this for quite some time since I like to do marital arts.

The skills might do you more good in the Marines.

But the mental training (inasmuch as you say it’s martial arts, I’m going to presume there is some mental training and control). that might be of more advantage in a special warfare outfit. Any true martial arts training will improve your flexibility and quicken your reaction time. If it doesn’t help in those areas, it’s not going to do you much good… anywhere… and you might be well advised to get into some real martial arts training.

You want SEAL? Work on intellect. Work on strength of character. Work on physical strength. Work on self control.Stay out of trouble. Swim. Run. Go beyond your limits. Get rid of self-doubt. If you can find any posted "standards" or "requirements" for SEAL, consider them minimums… don’t just meet them — exceed them. If they allow you a break between sets, do the sets without the breaks. I think you’ll find that, when you get to Coronado, "just enough" won’t be.

Think of it as gearing up. You’ll be going to a deserted island all by yourself. Whatever’s there is what’s in your pack. Once you get there, it won’t make any difference how badly you need something… even if it’s for survival. It won’t make any difference how hard you search for it. If you didn’t bring it with you, you won’t find it there.

People will tell you "Hell Week" is the toughest thing you’ll ever face. I suppose that for the rest of your life you’ll find yourself comparing every difficult, demanding task you face to it. It’s going to be the greatest physical, mental, emotional shock to which your system will have ever been exposed. But it’s to toughen you up for the stuff that follows.

If you get to Coronado, when you’re standing in formation waiting for the games to begin, take a good look at the guy directly in front of you, the one directly behind you, the one to your left and the one to your right. Odds are that at least four of you won’t be there at the end.

Is it easier for skinny people to learn kickboxing?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I’m just wondering if skinny people will be better at Kickboxing.

Not really, kickboxing needs alot of energy & they will get tired soon, nor will they have much power in their kicks & punches.
