Is MMA training becoming a fad?

a lot of kids now are starting to look for mma schools, and a lot of new guys just enrolled for my muay thai academy. my MT place only accepts you on 1 year contracts, and after 3 months of training, i can already tell most of those guys thatj ust signed up wont be staying after the year. some dont even show up to class anymore, or come once in a bluemoon. is this the same for you guys? i think this fad will die off in about a year.

Of course it is a fad. That is not to say that MMA doesn’t have its valid points. The problem is commercialism and what it has done to all martial arts, not just mma. Someone else mentioned several of the other fads that have been around. Since 1967, I have seen many of these fads come and go. The arts themselves do not go away, they just become less desirable, as a new fad comes into popularity. Right now mma is popular so many schools claiming to teach it have sprung up. Unfortunately many of them have instructors that are simply not well trained. But, then again, I meet traditional instructors that are not well trained either. To answer you question….. Is the MMA becoming a fad? It is not becoming a fad, it has been one for some time.

I’ve also noticed a large wave of new students in my MA classes. I suspect most wont last but that is always the case.

yeah people come to my gym all the time and show up everyday for a month, and then never come back. I think they just want to do it to say they’ve done it or to brag about how they train. But they don’t really enjoy training. I personally love it, i’m addicted to training.

Lol i despise those people that come to train just cause they wanna pick up a skill or two for a few while, say a month or two. And then don’t return anymore, cause the training is intense and you NEED DEDICATIONS to excel in something, which those people don’t have.

its a fad. the thing is that maybe the people who start out going to mma because they want to be cool might actually see it as a good way to work out, defend yourself, sport, something along those lines which will make them think "hey, this is fighting!". belive me there are people who start martial arts thinking it wont hurt much at the beginning. hahahahahhaha. i remember my first class in muay thai. we were told to check kicks and we were like "when do we stop?" and the instructor says "until your shin gets a bump or it turns purple, whatever comes first".

I think most people don’t have the will to do it and think of it as "I’m gonna make it to the ufc!" and that’s it. People forget that guys like Hughes, Silva, Alves, Penn, etc. worked really hard and fought for no money and did it for themselves. It doesn’t hit them that these guys came from a lot of underground places. Soon, though, a lot of people will stop going to the Gyms and stop going for MMA training (because they won’t go anywhere) and then it’ll be like music fads when kids think they’ll become famous musicians, famous metal "musicians" and famous emo "musicians" because anything that comes into style brings in good wave of posers who kill off chances for the loyalists and then those guys leave and the loyalists have new loyalists because some people will stay because they will have actually found their calling. it’s just the circle of life lol

wave of posers kill off guys have love it and do it for themselves and then those posers leave and there are only a handful of guys that came in with the posers who end up actually loving what they do.

Yep it was like in my high school wrestling team. It was finally put back on the roster my senior year and allot of guys came to the meeting to try it out. After the first few intense practices allot of guys dropped out. Some switched over to the basketball team where you did not have so much work. One guy dropped out cause he lost his first match it really is sad to see but martial arts is really good a separating the men from the boys and the women from the girls.

It’s a bit of a fad in that a lot of people think that they are going to become the best MMA fighter ever. However, I don’t believe the sport itself is a fad.

I totally agree. I’ve been training at the same MMA gym for 2 years now and as one of the youngest guys there, 18, I’ve seen a lot of young guys come in with tapout shirts thinking they’re all that because they’ve been duking it out with their friends in their back yards. Then they get schooled by someone half their size and either NEVER show up or show up until they lose their motivation. But long story short… I agree.

MMA IS MAINSTREAM AND A LOT OF KIDS WANT TO TRY MARTIAL ARTS WHICH IS COOL BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PEOPLE WHO CRAP OUT EARLY – ONE GUY HERE ASKED WHERE TO FIND MMA SHORTS FOR HIS KID BECAUSE HIS KID WANTED TO BE AN MMA FIGHTER FOR HALLOWEEN !!! LOL – THE UFC BEING SO PREVALENT HAS A LOT OF KIDS THINKING IT’S EASY TO FIGHT, GET A GOOD RECORD AND MAKE A LOT OF MONEY AND THEY COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH, I GUESS THE UFC GIVES THE ILLUSION THAT IT IS EASY, THE AMERICAN IDOL OF MMA. LYOTO MACHIDA AND SHOGUN HUA HAVE BEEN DOING MARTIAL ARTS MOST OF THEIR LIVES, SINCE THEY WERE SMALL CHILDREN, THAT’S WHY THOSE FIGHTERS ARE SO EFFICIENT AND GOOD, IT’S BEEN A LIFE LONG COMMITMENT WHICH TAKES YEARS. YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE AT WINNING THE LOTTERY THAN BEING A CHAMPION MMA FIGHTER. COMPETE IN MARTIAL ARTS AND MMA BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO DO IT, NOT FOR A GRAVY BOAT RIDE TO BEING RICH AND FAMOUS, AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN.

It’s a fad. We live in a society that’s obsessed with the whole "better’ and "faster" concept. And a lot of people went into MMA with the ill conceived thought that’s what they’re going to be getting. A system of fighting that’s better than traditional martial arts, and on top of it, will be faster than traditional. The problem? I’ve learned no real serious MMA trainer ever really claimed it was better or faster. But then when you look at the top UFC fighter’s resumes, you see they had years upon years of training. The only ones who claimed that seemed to be the wannabe UFC fighters. They see it on television and it looks very easy. But they never actually trained in it.

Not only that, it’s topped also with the even bigger falsehood that MMA schools are immune to crackpot teachers. I know of at least one MMA teacher who is nothing more than a UFC drop out. Couldn’t make it in the ring, so decided to teach. From what I heard none of his students have been doing too hot either.
